Every archive needs to establish a legal framework considering the European and local privacy laws, property laws and code of conducts in research. Licence agreements can be used for data reuse.

Trustworthy digital repositories
A digital repository can be trusted to provide long term access to and preservation of its holdings when several conditions are met. For this purpose a number of repository certification standards at different levels have been developed. For CESSDA all Service Providers need to be DSA certified.
