CROSSDA Local Events 2021

Three workshops from the Croatian Social Science Data Archive: "Data sharing and discovery at CROSSDA and CESSDA", "Introduction to anonymising quantitative data", and "Data cleaning operations using the R language".

1. Data sharing and discovery at CROSSDA and CESSDA

21. May 2021, 11:00 - 12:30

Language: Croatia
Lecturer: Marijana Glavica

In this workshop we will explain the prerequisites for data sharing, describe procedures for submitting a dataset to the Croatian Social Science Data Archive (CROSSDA), and demonstrate how to find data in the CESSDA Data Catalogue. In the first part, we will give an overview of the prerequisites, and also explain what a data management plan is and why it is important. We will go a bit deeper into the ethical and legal prerequisites for data sharing, with examples of information that should be given to research participants in informed consent forms about data sharing and protecting their personal data. Other prerequisites, such as cleaning and anonymising data, will be mentioned in passing, because these topics will be covered in more detail in separate workshops. In the second part, we will describe the steps for submitting data to CROSSDA. Data access levels will be discussed with workshop participants, starting with what is currently available at CROSSDA and exploring what researchers think should be available in the future. We will also explain what additional documentation needs to be submitted in addition to the data itself, and we will present data description (metadata) guidelines. Also, we will show secure mechanisms to transfer the data to CROSSDA. In the third part, we will demonstrate how to find data produced by other researchers in CROSSDA and CESSDA data catalogues.

2. Introduction to anonymising quantitative data

8. May 2021, 13:00 - 15:00

language: Croatian
Lecturer: Vedran Halamić

Researchers need to have an understanding of anonymisation fundamentals, basic theoretical concepts like k-anonymity and principal techniques like data aggregation and generalization which are the primary topics of this workshop. The workshop is divided into three parts, the first one being focused on theoretical concepts like k-anonymity, the definition of personal data, categorization of identifiers (direct and indirect) and others. After the first part, the focus of the workshop will shift towards the practical side and describe basic anonymisation procedures like identifying and removing direct identifiers, data aggregation, generalization and restriction of variable range (cut-off/top coding). Furthermore, practical examples of anonymisation will be demonstrated during the third part of the workshop using the appropriate software tool (e.g ARX, Amnesia). These include anonymising commonly collected data in social research like age, education, job description etc. The content of the DMEG will be used and promoted during the workshop, particularly the whole Chapter 5. Protect, and especially Chapter 5.5. Anonymization.

3. Data cleaning operations using the R language

11. June 2021, 11:00 - 14:00

language: Croatian
lecturer: Denis Vlašiček

This workshop is aimed at researchers and students with little or no experience with programming. The goal of the workshop is to introduce the participants to the R programming language, one of the most popular open source programming languages in the social sciences. Participants will be shown the basics of the R language, how to import and transform data in R, as well as the basics of regular expressions. All this will be done using the very popular RStudio integrated development environment (IDE) and the tidyverse collection of packages. Participants will be provided with helpful resources, and materials from the workshop.

The content of the DMEG will be promoted during the workshop, particularly chapters 2 Organise & Document and 3 Process.
